Ingredients

  • 14 oz firm tofu pressed to remove excess moisture
  • 3 tablespoons soy sauce for marinade
  • 1 teaspoon sesame oil adds flavor
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder for savory depth
  • 1 tablespoon maple syrup for a touch of sweetness
  • 0.5 cup panko breadcrumbs for crunch
  • 2 tablespoons cornstarch for crispiness
  • to taste salt and pepper for seasoning

Equipment

  • Baking sheet
  • Parchment paper
  • mixing bowls
  • Kitchen towel or paper towels
  • Knife
  • Cutting board

Method

  1. Begin by pressing the tofu to remove excess moisture. Wrap it in a clean towel and set something heavy on top for about 10 minutes, then cut it into bite-sized cubes.
  2. In a mixing bowl, whisk together soy sauce, sesame oil, garlic powder, and maple syrup to create a flavorful marinade.
  3. Add the tofu cubes to the marinade, gently tossing to coat each piece evenly. Let sit for about 5 minutes to absorb the flavors.
  4. In a shallow dish, mix panko breadcrumbs with cornstarch and a pinch of salt and pepper. This will be your coating mixture.
  5. Using tongs or a fork, remove each tofu cube from the marinade, letting excess drip off, then roll it in the breadcrumb mixture until fully coated.
  6. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper and arrange the coated tofu pieces in a single layer, giving each enough space to crisp up evenly.
  7. Bake in a preheated oven at 400°F (200°C) for 25 to 30 minutes, flipping halfway through, until the nuggets are golden and crispy.
  8. Once baked, remove from oven and let cool slightly for a crunchy exterior and tender interior.
  9. Serve the crispy tofu nuggets hot with your favorite dipping sauce—think tahini, sriracha, or a cool cucumber yogurt.

Notes

For extra flavor, sprinkle with sesame seeds or chopped green onions before serving. You can also experiment with different seasonings in the breadcrumb mixture for variety.
