Whiskey Citrus Slushies with a Twist

This recipe combines whiskey with caramelized citrus peel and fresh juice to create a frozen slushie with a smooth, icy texture. The mixture features a flavorful balance of boozy brightness and citrus aroma, achieved through blending and chilling until perfectly slushy. The result is a visually appealing, icy beverage with a bright, semi-opaque finish.

Ingredients

  • 2 tbsp citrus peel (orange or lemon) preferably from fresh citrus, caramelized
  • 1/2 cup sugar for caramelizing citrus peel
  • 1.5 cups orange or lemon juice freshly squeezed
  • 1 cup whiskey good quality preferred
  • 1 medium ice cubes for blending

Equipment

  • Zester or Microplane
  • Blender
  • Freezer-safe container

Method

  1. Begin by caramelizing the citrus peel: sprinkle sugar into a dry skillet over medium heat, watching until it melts and turns a golden amber color, then add the citrus peel and cook until fragrant and slightly browned.
  2. Remove the caramelized peel from heat and let it cool for a few minutes; then chop into small pieces and set aside.
  3. Pour the freshly squeezed citrus juice into a blender, then add the chopped caramelized citrus peel and whiskey.
  4. Add the ice cubes to the blender, creating a generously filled container suitable for blending.
  5. Blend everything on high until the mixture is smooth, frosty, and fully combined, with a slushie-like consistency.
  6. Pour the slushie into glasses, and optionally garnish with a twist of citrus peel or fresh herbs for presentation.

Notes

For a more intense citrus aroma, you can lightly torch the citrus peel before chopping. Adjust the sweetness with simple syrup if desired. Serve immediately for the best icy texture.
